THE GROSSE POINTE WINDSURFING CLUB NEWSLETTER
September 12, 2006

This newsletter is sent by email to members of the GPWC, and anyone else who wishes to receive it.  It is usually published twice a month during the summer sailing season, occasionally at other times, or whenever the editor or a guest editor gets around to it.  Please contact me if you wish to have your name added to or removed from the mailing list.  Comments, contributions, announcements, trip reports, etc, are welcome.  Nathaniel Siddall, editor.  nsiddall@earthlink.net  phone (734) 475-6758

THE GROSSE POINTE WINDSURFING CLUB

We are a group of amateur boardsailors who usually meet once a week during the summer to sail together, practice and hold informal races on a small course.  Many of us compete in race events regionally and around the country, and we sometimes go on group trips to shortboard sailing destinations such as Hatteras.  Some prefer free sailing to racing, but enjoy learning and sailing with other windsurfers.  Some of us are beginners, some are fairly experienced.  Anyone is welcome to join us.  If you've never raced, but are curious about it, we will show you how, teach you the rules and get you started.  (But-we aren't instructors or a camp; you have to take responsibility for your own safety.)

Our usual sailing spot is Patterson Park, at Three Mile Road, on Lake St. Clair just north of Detroit.  This is a private facility, and we are permitted to sail there as guests of the city of Grosse Pointe Park, on Wednesday afternoons only.  Please be a good guest, be ready to leave by park closing time, and be sure to keep the gate to the water closed.  (The combination for the gate lock is 21-34-7.)  The schedule is roughly as follows:  2:00-6:00 free sailing; 6:00-7:30 informal races; 7:30-8:30, derigging, arguing about race results, giving each other free advice.  9:00  (or sunset)-park closes.

(Club activities are conducted under the auspices of MOWIND The Midwest Organizers for Windsurfing and the U.S. Windsurfing Association)

Directions to Patterson Park:  From Route 94, about 5 miles east of 75, take the Cadieux Road exit and head south.  At the end of Cadieux, turn right on Jefferson.  Proceed roughly 1/2 mile, and turn left on Three Mile Road.  At the end of Three Mile is the park entrance.

See the calendar below for a list of our scheduled activities.

PRODIGY CHAMPIONSHIP/LIQUID SURF AND SAIL FALL CHALLENGE
I'm going to drive down to the event, at Fort Walton Beach, FL, October 27-29, and I could transport gear for anyone who might want to fly down.  This is the designated North American Prodigy Championship for 2006, and will also have a mixed Hybrid fleet, and other fleets.  It's the last event in the US Windsurfing National Race Tour.  You can find info at www.liquidsurfandsail.com.

PONTIAC YACHT CLUB SERIES RESULTS
The honor of windsurfers was a little tarnished this year, as we surrendered the top three places to Lasers.  That probably reflects the larger and more competitive group of Lasers that was out there.  They were interesting to compete against.  In very light conditions we could beat them downwind, but they beat us upwind.  We did have one very gnarly day when the windsurfers finished in the top spots, and most of the Lasers didn't even finish.  For the series as a whole there are still more Lasers behind us than ahead of us in the standings, so we were at least competitive.  The top windsurfer in the standings was Dave Chapman, followed by Nat Siddall and Glen Gardner.  Thanks, Glen, for the organizing and scoring.

MOWIND SERIES RESULTS
Local folks did well in the Hybrid rankings, with Nat Siddall, Chris Barry, and Rod Clevenger in the top spots.  In the other categories, not so well.  Our strongest challengers were disadvantaged by missing some of the upper Midwest events.  But Dave Chapman was 4th in the Formula group, and Bruce Williams 10th in the Longboard Limited category.  You can see complete results, pictures, etc, at http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/mowind  Thanks to Jeff Koeberl and the MOWIND group for all the work they do on this.
