NEWSLETTER
May 21, 2007
This newsletter is sent by email to
members of the GPWC, and anyone else who wishes to receive it. It is
usually published twice a month during the summer sailing season, occasionally
at other times, or whenever the editor or a guest editor gets around to
it. Please contact me if you wish to have your name added to or removed
from the mailing list. Comments, contributions, announcements, trip
reports, etc, are welcome. Nathaniel Siddall, editor. nsiddall@earthlink.net phone (734) 678-5625. Visit our website at http://gpwc.jimminet.net
THE GROSSE POINTE
WINDSURFING CLUB
We are a group of amateur boardsailors who usually
meet once a week during the summer to sail together, practice and hold informal
races on a small course. Many of us compete in race events regionally and
around the country, and we sometimes go on group trips to shortboard sailing
destinations such as Hatteras. Some prefer free sailing to racing, but
enjoy learning and sailing with other windsurfers. Some of us are
beginners, some are fairly experienced. Anyone is welcome to join
us. If you've never raced, but are curious about it, we will show you how,
teach you the rules and get you started. Loaner boards may be available
for people who can windsurf but don't have race gear. (But--we aren't
instructors or a camp; you have to take responsibility for your own
safety.)
We are part of MOWIND The Midwest Organizers for
Windsurfing, and the U.S. Windsurfing Association.
THE 2007 SEASON
Our club weekday racing series will
start THIS WEDNESDAY at Patterson Park. Gather at Frank's
house afterwards for pizza, beer, season-opening get-together. (825 Grand
Marais, a couple of blocks from the park; phone 313 331 2129) We'll aim to
start racing between 6 and 7:00, and head over to Frank's house by 8:30 or
9:00.
We are going to do a Wednesday night
series at Patterson, approximately 6 meetings, and a Monday night series at the
Pontiac Yacht Club. See below for more information. Regattas are
coming up: The Toledo Championship is June 2-3, and our Saturday regatta
at Patterson Park is June 16. Notices for both these events are
attached. The Higgins Lake Regatta will again be the weekend after Labor
Day. We are also planning a "learn-to-windsurf" day with free instruction
at the Pontiac Yacht Club--date to be determined.
PATTERSON PARK SERIES
We are once again invited to Patterson
Park, a private facility operated by the City of Grosse Pointe Park, on
Wednesday afternoons. Any Wednesday from May 23 through September is
open. Approximately 6 Wednesdays will be chosen as Patterson Series
events. Frank Murray will serve as commodore for the series
(and all-around senior windsurfer of Patterson) and he will designate the
days, depending on the weather forecast, scheduling conflicts, etc. He
will post the information no later than 6:00 p.m. the night before. Visit
our new website (see below) on Tuesday nights, and be prepared to join us on
Wednesdays. We'll do a variety of races and award small prizes.
Loaner gear is available for these sessions--contact us in advance if
interested. Racing will typically start between 6 and 7:00.
Directions to Patterson Park:
From Route 94, about 5 miles east of 75, take the Cadieux Road exit and head
south. At the end of Cadieux, turn right on Jefferson. Proceed
roughly 1/2 mile, and turn left on Three Mile Road. At the end of Three
Mile is the park entrance. Please be a considerate guest, be ready to
leave by park closing time, and be sure to keep the gate to the water
closed. (The combination for the gate lock is 30-15-21.)
PONTIAC YACHT CLUB
SERIES
The PYC and Glen Gardner are again
organizing a Monday night series, open to all single-handed sailing craft, open
to non-PYC members. We've typically had a mix of Lasers, Sunfish, and
windsurfers. The races are officiated and scored with the Portsmouth
handicapping system, and trophies awarded at the end of the season. We've
had windsurfers at least in the top three every year. Glen is acting as
commodore for this series, and will designate which Mondays we race. As
with the Patterson series, he'll make a decision no later than 6:00 p.m. the
night before, so check our website to see. The first possible PYC series
event will be June 18.
For information contact Glen at
glennles@pol.net or 248-855-0031.
Directions to the PYC can be found at www.pyc54.org. Racing starts at
7:00. Loaner boards are available for these sessions--contact us in
advance if interested. We need volunteers for the race
committee--if you or someone you know can take a turn, please contact
Glen.
NEW WEBSITE
Thanks to Jim Donahue, we now have a
new club website: http://gpwc.jimminet.net Check it out for
photos, race announcements, everything. Check the messages section to see
when our Monday and Wednesday club racing sessions are taking
place.

ALUMNI REPORT
We've been getting some nice letters
from Steve Bodner. He's in San Francisco, working as an architect and
design consultant, and his wife Alex is shopping for graduate schools. He
did a few RS:X events, but has mostly become one of the leading members of the
SF Bay Formula gang. If you remember Steve from a few years back you
should check out his website, www.stevebodner.com

2002 Windski,
$550. The windski uses a skateboard-like deck with footstraps risen from a long
special designed ski with a shallow skeg. A windsurfing rig can be attached if
it has a chinook base. It's amazing how little wind it takes to zip off
especially on hardpacked snow. I have been demo'ing this and can pass it on
locally if someone is interested. Mike 249-360-0859, ivanbanez@hotmail.com
