THE GROSSE POINTE WINDSURFING CLUB NEWSLETTER

August 24, 2007

This newsletter is sent by email to members of the GPWC, and anyone else who wishes to receive it.  It is usually published twice a month during the summer sailing season, occasionally at other times, or whenever the editor or a guest editor gets around to it.  Please contact me if you wish to have your name added to or removed from the mailing list.  Comments, contributions, announcements, trip reports, etc, are welcome.  Nathaniel Siddall, editor.  nsiddall@earthlink.net   phone (734) 678-5625.  Visit our website at http://gpwc.jimminet.net

THE GROSSE POINTE WINDSURFING CLUB

We are a group of amateur boardsailors who usually meet once a week during the summer to sail together, practice and hold informal races on a small course.  Many of us compete in race events regionally and around the country, and we sometimes go on group trips to shortboard sailing destinations such as Hatteras.  Some prefer free sailing to racing, but enjoy learning and sailing with other windsurfers.  Some of us are beginners, some are fairly experienced.  Anyone is welcome to join us.  If you've never raced, but are curious about it, we will show you how, teach you the rules and get you started.  Loaner boards may be available for people who can windsurf but don't have race gear.  (But--we aren't instructors or a camp; you have to take responsibility for your own safety.)

We are part of MOWIND The Midwest Organizers for Windsurfing, and the U.S. Windsurfing Association.

HIGGINS LAKE REGATTA SEPTEMBER 8-9

Our Fall regatta is coming up very soon.  A race notice is attached--send it in now to get the pre-registration discount, and call to reserve campsites. (Info is in the notice.)  It's a fun event--we have a campfire and party each night at the event site, and most people stay at the campground.  Steve Grody has volunteered to create a gourmet pancake breakfast for us once again.  We need another one or two volunteers for race committee, registration, etc--please let me know if you can help.  Volunteers get free admission to the event, a fabulous custom event t-shirt, and much appreciation.

PRODIGY CHAMPIONSHIP FORT WALTON BEACH

The Liquid Surf and Sail event will be the Prodigy Championship again this year, October 26-28, in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.  I'll be driving down, and offering board transport service.  The Texas Prodigy group is expected to turn out in force this year, and I hope we can put together a team to compete with them.  This event is open to other hybrid boards, and Formula, as well.  Let me know if you are interested in this.

WEEKLY RACING UPDATE

We've had some good sessions at Patterson Park, and the Pontiac Yacht Club.  Glen has been doing great work organizing race committees for the latter, and he has results posted at www.pyc54.org.  We more or less do alternate weeks, Mondays at PYC and Wednesdays at Patterson, but check our website the night before to see if there are announcements concerning the next day sailing plans.  Next Monday will be a session at PWC, weather permitting, and I believe that will be the last one for the season.

ALUM CREEK REGATTA REPORT

Report from Jim Donahue:

On an unseasonably warm weekend for mid May, the Ohio regulars and one guy from Michigan headed to Columbus, OH for the Alum Creek Regatta.  This regatta was dominated by the long boards, even Rod Clevenger dusted off his old Equipe for this one.  On Saturday the wind started off light but continued building through out the day.  In fact the wind had pickup up so much that after the conclusion of racing, Eric Rahnenfuehrer and Steve Burkey got out their short boards and went for some screaming fast rides.  Despite a late start we were able to get 5 races in on Saturday.

The race organizers even experimented with new race technology, the 'Auto Race Time Compensating Mark' (patent pending).  This race mark automatically extends the length of the course to compensate for higher wind speeds to prevent the race from finishing too quickly.  The course designer placed this mark at the end of the downwind leg, and on the final race on Saturday, when the wind speed exceed 20 MPH, this new technology race mark swung into action.  Unfortunately it did not restrict its course changing abilities to the time between races and thus this technology was deemed not ready for prime time.

On Sunday race organizers were faced with a problem, the race committee boat had engine problems and was out of commission, thus they were unable to set a course.  But have no fear, the committee came up with  an alternate plan and devised a long distance race.  Thus 3 long boards, 1 formula, 1 Prodigy and 1 Kona raced to the north end of Alum Creek and back.  The racers quickly separated into 2 groups, the long boards and everyone else.  Despite the length of the race there were 2 close finishes, with Joe Belhobek just inching out fellow long boarder Rod Clevenger and Brad Segro on his Kona finishing just ahead of Jim Donahue on his Prodigy.

Race Results:

Formula -     Eric Rahnenfuehrer

Masters -     Brad Segro, James Donahue

Seniors -     Joe Belhobek, Rod Clevenger,Steve Burkey, Brad Petot, Dennis Brengartner

IMCO -      Paul Sandstrom, Don Dunphy

Novice -     Del Vergon
